Humidifiers

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers oxygen humidifiers used with certain covered Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

  • Covered by Part B
  • Costs vary depending on your situation

Description

When medically necessary , Part B covers oxygen humidifiers used with certain covered durable medical equipment (DME), like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, respiratory assist devices, or oxygen equipment

Coverage details

Medicare doesn’t usually cover humidifiers or other similar items, like room heaters, dehumidifiers, or electric air cleaners.

Costs

  • You pay 100% for most room humidifiers or other similar items. If it’s medically necessary, you won’t have to pay a separate amount for an oxygen humidifier. The monthly fee for your oxygen equipment will include the cost of an oxygen humidifier.
  • You pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount to rent or purchase a humidifier that's used with a CPAP device or a respiratory assist device.

Ask your doctor or healthcare provider how much your test, item, or service will cost.

Your doctor may recommend services that Medicare does not cover or offers too frequently. This could end up in additional costs for you. Make sure to ask your doctor about the reasons for these recommendations and what Medicare will actually cover.

Specific amounts you could owe depend on:

  • Other insurance you may have

  • How much your doctor charges

  • If your doctor accepts assignment

  • The type of facility

  • Where you get your test, item, or service
