Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers caregiver training services if certain conditions apply

  • After the Part B deductible , you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount

Description

If you're a caregiver of a person with Medicare, this training teaches you skills you need to help your patient or loved one comply with their treatment plan, including how to:

  • Give medications
  • Help with daily tasks
  • Move the patient safely
  • Communicate effectively with the patient
  • Better understand and manage the patient’s medical condition(s)
  • Give personalized care and emotional support
  • Prevent bedsores and infections, and care for wounds

Coverage details

If a health care provider determines that caregiver training is appropriate for a patient’s treatment plan, the caregiver can get individual or group training sessions from the provider without the patient present.

Who's eligible

Caregivers are eligible if both of these conditions apply:

  • The training focuses on helping the patient meet the health and treatment goals they set with their doctor or other health care provider.
  • The patient needs a caregiver’s help for their treatment to succeed.

Provider requirements

Caregivers can get this training from Medicare providers, including:

  • Doctors
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Clinical nurse specialists
  • Certified nurse-midwives
  • Physician assistants
  • Clinical psychologists
  • Therapists (including physical and occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists)

Costs

After the Part B deductible , you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.

Facility

Through January 30, 2026, caregivers can get caregiver training services at any location in the U.S. through telehealth. Starting January 31, 2026, caregivers must live in a rural area and go to an office or medical facility that’s also in a rural area (in the U.S.) to get these services through telehealth.
