Quality Concerns

If you have a concern or complaint about the quality of care you get from a dialysis facility and can’t get the dialysis facility to resolve it, you may call one of the organizations below.

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Networks

ESRD Networks are non-profit organizations paid by Medicare. They assist dialysis facilities with improving the quality of care patients get. The ESRD Networks also:

  • Conduct quality improvement projects
  • Provide technical assistance to dialysis facilities
  • Investigate and resolve patient complaints
  • Validate facility and patient data
  • Sponsor outreach and educational activities for patients and providers
  • Provide technical and educational materials to patients and providers

State Survey Agencies

State survey agencies are present in each State and Territory. They assure dialysis facilities meet Medicare standards. They send inspectors to dialysis facilities to check on:

  • Patient rights
  • Staff training
  • Machine safety
  • Water quality
  • Cleanliness

During the visits, inspectors talk to patients to find out how they are being treated during dialysis. If the facilities don’t meet Medicare's standards, they must make a plan to correct any problems.
