Hepatitis B shots

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers these preventive shots if you’re at medium or high risk for Hepatitis B. Your Hepatitis B risk increases if one or more of these conditions applies to you:

  • You have hemophilia and you get factors VIII or IX.
  • You have  End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant).
  • You have diabetes.
  • You live with someone who has Hepatitis B.
  • You're a health care worker and have frequent contact with blood or bodily fluids.

Other factors may also increase your risk for Hepatitis B. Check with your doctor or other health care provider to find out if you're at medium or high risk for Hepatitis B.

Your costs in Original Medicare

You pay nothing for Hepatitis B shots if your doctor or other health care provider accepts assignment for giving you the shot.

Frequency of services

Your doctor or other health care provider may recommend you get services more often than Medicare covers. Or, they may recommend services that Medicare doesn’t cover. If this happens, you may have to pay some or all of the costs. Ask questions so you understand why your doctor is recommending certain services and if, or how much, Medicare will pay for them.
