Diabetes supplies & services
How often is it covered?
Supplies: Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers some diabetes supplies, including:
- Blood sugar (glucose) test strips
- Blood sugar testing monitors
- Lancet devices and lancets
- Glucose control solutions
- Therapeutic shoes or inserts
As of July 2013, Medicare has a National Mail-Order Program for diabetic testing supplies. No matter where you live, you’ll need to use a Medicare national mail-order contract supplier for Medicare to pay for diabetic testing supplies that are delivered to your home. If you don’t want diabetic testing supplies delivered to your home, you can go to any local store (local pharmacy or storefront supplier) that’s enrolled with Medicare and buy them there. The National Mail-Order Program doesn't require you to change your testing monitor. If you're happy with your current monitor, look for a mail-order contract supplier or local store that can provide the supplies you need.
Services: Part B covers some diabetes services, including:
- Diabetes self-management training
- Yearly eye exam
- Foot exam
- Glaucoma tests
- Nutrition therapy services (medical)
Your costs in Original Medicare
Your doctor or other health care provider may recommend you get services more often than Medicare covers. Or, they may recommend services that Medicare doesn’t cover. If this happens, you may have to pay some or all of the costs. It’s important to ask questions so you understand why your doctor is recommending certain services and whether Medicare will pay for them.
