Five years ago, I became a caregiver for my husband after he suffered the removal of a meningioma (tumor) that had been growing for 15 to 20 years and a subdural hematoma. Sadly, he then developed Alzheimer's disease. In 2006, an aortic valve replacement procedure caused an even greater decline in his memory. He is now between the 2nd and 3rd stage of Alzheimer's. I have been a caregiver for much of my life. Prior to my husband's illness, I cared for my brother who had been diagnosed with cancer. I conduct all of the activities associated with daily living for my husband. This includes trips to the doctor and taking care of other necessary appointments. I also teach five hours a day, so I must pay out of my own pocket for a sitter while working. Unfortunately, we did not plan ahead adequately prior to my husband's illness, so we do not have long term care insurance.
